RedskinsToday Prospect Guide: Quarterbacks

Done by : Matthew Valdovinos

QB1: Josh Rosen - UCLA
Josh Rosen is the most NFL-ready Quarterback in the entire draft class. He may not have the elite physical gifts like some of the other prospects, but he’s the most prepared mentally and mechanically. Rosen is the best decision maker of the group making him the best prepared to start week one. Rosen also has the best technique of any of the QB’s, his throwing motion, feet, and accuracy are all a step above the rest. Rosen is the safest choice in the class and will most likely be the first QB taken.
Draft Projection: 1st Overall / Not-Available at Redskins Pick

QB2: Josh Allen - Wyoming
Josh Allen is not ready to play in the NFL. However he will be, and he when he is he’ll take the league by storm. Allen is extremely inconsistent, one throw could be a perfectly timed and placed 60 yard touchdown, and the next could be a terrible interception. Josh Allen has the best arm and skill set in the entire draft, but he needs time to learn how to use them in the NFL. He’s a team player and a natural leader and if the Redskins drafted him and let him sit behind Colt McCoy for a few games, Jay Gruden could turn him into an elite NFL quarterback. I don’t expect Josh Allen to be the second QB taken, but I do believe he is the best QB for the Redskins to take after Josh Rosen.
Draft Projection: Top 15 / Probably Available at Redskins Pick

QB3: Baker Mayfield - Oklahoma
Baker Mayfield is one of the most interesting prospects in the entire draft class. I could see him going anywhere from 2nd overall, or falling into the second round. While I don’t particularly like his skill set and physical talent, I can’t deny his production and heart. I’ve always been a fan of production over potential, and I can’t go back on that now. I’m not sure how I feel about Mayfields personality mixing with the Redskins media, but if the Redskins do take him they get an immediate playmaker. Mayfield is the ultimate boom or bust prospect, but Jay Gruden does run a QB friendly offense and Mayfield in the backfield with Chris Thompson could make for an ultra exciting duo.
Draft Projection: Top 15 / Potentially Available at Redskins Pick

QB4: Mason Rudolph  - Oklahoma State
Mason Rudolph has drawn a lot of comparisons to Kirk Cousins. An accurate quarterback that has the arm to make throws downfield, athletic enough to escape the pocket and make the occasional play with his legs, but prefers to stay in the pocket. Nothing about Rudolph blows you away, he doesn’t have 4’4 speed, he doesn’t have the biggest arm, and he played in an Air-Raid college offense. Rudolph is a sleeper quarterback to me, and someone i believe can shine in Jay Grudens offense. He’d be a younger, cheaper replacement to Kirk Cousins.
Draft Projection: Early Second Round / Potential Trade Up in Round 2

QB5: Sam Darnold - USC
Sam Darnold has similar issues as Josh Allen, he has great physical tools, but lack mental fortitude and consistency. The difference between Allen and Darnold is that Darnold was on a roster stacked with NFL talent, which makes this years failures even more sour. I can’t deny the the physical specimen that Darnold is, but I doubt he’ll be ready to play in the NFL until at least 2019. He should return to school for at least one more year, but if he does declare i could see a team in the top 10 taking the risk.
Draft Projection: Top 10 / Potentially Available at Redskins Pick

QB6: Jarrett Stidham - Auburn
Stidham is the best “Project QB” outside of the first round. He has all the tools needed to develop into a top passer, and showed real signs of greatness at times this season. Stidham has a good arm, and above average athleticism and teams looking to draft and develop a quarterback in the later rounds should do their homework on Stidham. Even though he fell short in his game against UCF, he had some NFL caliber throws to add to his film.
Draft Projection: 3rd round / Option if Cousins is Tagged

QB7:  Luke Falk - Washington State
Playing in an air-raid scheme. Luke Falk lacks NFL mechanics, but does have potential. He has a strong right arm, and good touch accuracy. Falk seems to be the most comfortable of the QB’s in the pocket, but that may be because he’s always in the shotgun. Falk will need time to learn NFL offenses, but when he does he could develop into and an above average starter.
Draft Projection: 4th Round / Option if Cousins is Tagged

QB8: Lamar Jackson - Louisville
Lamar Jackson is the most exciting player in college football, unfortunately history does not bode well for the dual-threat Quarterback. Memories of Robert Griffin III still sit in the back of Redskins fans minds. While I think Lamar Jackson has all the talent in the world, I don’t know if I’d be comfortable with the Redskins spending their first pick on a running Quarterback.
Draft Projection: 1st Round / Available at Redskins Pick
