With a long term deal once again in doubt, I'm going to look over the potential landing spots for Kirk Cousins this off season, along with the chances I believe each scenario has of ocurring. Let's dive in.
WASHINGTON REDSKINS : 55/100 - Kirk Cousins has once again played at a franchise-quarterback level, and has only garnered more leverage over the team. A long term deal seems out of the picture, so it's once again a tag, or walk situation. The team can place another franchise tag ($34 Million) or they can place the transition tag ($28) and run the risk of a team outbidding them for the Quarterback. While I believe that both Kirk Cousins and the Front Office would like to have him as the team's QB for the rest of his career, they still are far apart in terms of guaranteed money on that long term deal. Kirk Cousins has made it clear he wants to play on a year-to-year basis. The Redskins can tag him and guarantee that they will have a serviceable starter for 2018, or they can cut him loose and try to draft a new Quarterback, or try to give Colt McCoy the keys. While my gut says that Kirk Cousins will be here in 2018, I truly don't know at this point.
DENVER BRONCOS : 40/100 - The Broncos seem to be the most likely destination for Kirk Cousins if he were to depart from the Redskins. They have pieces on Offense to work with (C.J. Anderson, Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders) and of course have one of the better defenses in football (although its taken a step back from previous years.) Rumors have been swirling that the Broncos Front Office has made it known that they are extremely interested in the Quarterback. If Kirk Cousins ends up as a Free Agent, Denver will be the #1 candidate to sign him.
NEW YORK JETS : 25/100 - With Josh McCown aging, and young Quarterbacks Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg seeming incapable, the Jets are a team that could be in play for Kirk Cousins. The Jets were expected by many to be the worst team in football this season, but they've strung together a decent amount of wins. Maybe, this Jets front office thinks they are closer to being a competitive team than others expect, and could go all out for a Franchise Quarterback. Should they think that, Kirk Cousins would be at the top of their list.
ARIZONA CARDINALS : 35/100 - The Arizona Cardinals are my "Dark Horse" candidates to pursue Kirk Cousins if he were to leave for free agency. Carson Palmer has been regressing, along with suffering multiple injuries these last few seasons. With Larry Fitzgerald lusting for a super bowl, the Cardinals may prefer Kirk Cousins over the alternative of drafting a Quarterback and waiting for him to progress. Larry Fitzgerald, David Johnson and Kirk Cousins would be quite the trio.
NEW YORK GIANTS : 5/100 - Imagine Kirk Cousins in Giants jersey? Yeah, I just threw up too. Eli Manning isn't cutting it as the starter anymore, and they will go into the draft with a top 3 pick. While some may think Kirk Cousins could be a good idea, they just won't have the cap space for that. With Landon Collins and Odell Beckham Jr's contracts coming up, the Giants' front office will have their hands full re-signing those guys, let alone a gigantic Kirk Cousins deal.
BUFFALO BILLS : 20/100 - The Buffalo Bills are an intriguing option to me. While they may seem like one of the more obvious spots for #8 to go, I just don't see it happening. I see them trading up in the draft for a young Quarterback, they aren't in any rush for a franchise quarterback.
Honorable Mentions : Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars.

I think he'd be more likely to go to the Jags, then the Giants. Especially with all the pieces the G's need to resign. Whereas the Jags are a good QB away from being year in, year out, super bowl contenders
ReplyDeleteHopefully he'll go to neither.
